ArcGIS Pro is desktop GIS software developed by Esri, which replaces their ArcMap software generation.[1] The product was announced as part of Esri's ArcGIS 10.3 release,[2] ArcGIS Pro is notable in having a 64 bit architecture, combined 2-D, 3-D support, ArcGIS Online integration and Python 3 support.[3]

ArcGIS Pro 2.7 was released in December 2020, and features layer blending, 3D enhancements, GPS connectivity as well as real-time data logging to streamline workflows.[4]

A major version update occurred with the release of ArcGIS Pro 3.0 in June 2022. Several major changes include: the dropping of support for geocoders created with ArcMap 10.x and versions of ArcGIS Pro 2.9.x and earlier; project files created or modified with ArcGIS Pro 3.0 are not readable by versions 2.9.x and earlier; geodatabases created in 3.0 may not be fully compatible with prior versions; and perhaps most significantly, Parcel Fabric datasets created in prior versions must be upgraded to be fully compatible in version 3.0.[5]

ESRI (Environmental Research Systems Research Institute, Inc.) built the cloud based software, ArcGIS to create and share interactive web maps. Collaboration based on organizational maps can be edited and shared in real time by utilizing “MyMaps” overlay, which is a content depository where web maps, shape files, dashboards, templates, and other files are stored and retrieved. Previous Esri-vetted maps are collocated in ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World, containing useful, high quality, ready-to-use geographic content. ArcGIS features base maps, in addition to map layers, customization of map layers to enable multiple layers’ visibility, editing tool, measurement methods, and comparative mapping using Geo-Inquiries.[7]

ArcGIS : Challenges and Solutions

There are several challenges pertaining to ESRI’s Geographic Information Systems’ framework. Firstly, discovering relevant geospatial data is comprehensive in that discovery is not based on keyword searching. Secondly, data sources must be selected and interpreted in natural language, may not clearly be designated. The third challenge autonomous systems such as ArcGIS has is not possessing the capability to fetch data from specific resources which often require Application Programming Interface (API) or URL download access keys and/or passwords. Large Language Models-Find (LLMs) addresses the second and third issues by utilizing handbooks for each data source which provide technical information for data fetching. QGIS (Quest Geographic Information Systems) and Python programming using Jupyter Notebooks allows users to access data without coding using QGIS plugin via download, whereas Python programming enables automated processing tasks to run with other programs or agents, allowing for greater customization and faster download speeds. ArcGIS utilizes autonomous data discovers powered by the universally accepted LLM-Find within its framework.[8]

Utility

The ArcGIS software costs $1,500 for a single-user license along with a $300 desktop installation fee. However, basic statistical analysis tools and algorithms within ArcGIS are available to use in the law enforcement community, as it allows law enforcement to assess patterns in crime scenes over time within a space. However, there will be no feedback on (the current) ArcGIS 10.2 alpha version, until ArcGIS releases its new beta software version of 10.2. Comparable products may be less expensive than ArcGIS, but ArcGIS requires official licensing, rendering it more useful in ongoing investigations.[9]

Specific tasks within ArcGIS include computational methods and applications such as 1.) Delineating functional regions as well as application in health geography; 2.)
