The Army Academy of Border and Coastal Defense is an academic institution affiliated to the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF). It is a specialized academy for the preparation of border and coastal guard forces. Its main campus is in Xi'an, Shaanxi, and it has two secondary campuses in Urumqi, Xinjiang and Kunming, Sichuan.[1]

The academy had its origins from three different organizations and was created as a new institution in June 2017.[1]
Border Defense Academy
- In July 1941, the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University 7th campus was established in Xing county, Shanxi province.[1]
- In September 1948, Northwestern Military Region Military and Political University, which was later renamed as the Northwestern Military Region Military Officer School.[1]
- In 1951, the school was renamed as the PLA First Infantry School.[1]
- In 1955, the school was renamed as the PLA Tianshui Infantry School.[1]
- In 1962, the school was renamed as the PLA Lanzhou Infantry School.[1]
- In 1969, the school was abolished.[1]
- In January 1974, the school was reestablished, and was renamed as the Lanzhou Military Region Military and Political Cadre School and settled in Chang’an District, Shaanxi Province.[1]
- In February 1978, the school was renamed as the Lanzhou Military Region Infantry School.[1]
- In January 1981, it was renamed as the Xi’an Army School.[1]
- In December 2004, the Urumqi Army Academy and Urumqi Military Hospital Academy were merged into the Xi’an Army Academy Urumqi Border Defense Cadre Training Group.[1]
- In September 2011, the school was renamed as the Border Defense Academy.[1]
- In 2016, the school was reassigned from the Lanzhou Military Region to the PLA Army.[1]
Urumqi Ethnic Cadre Academy
- In November 1949, the Xinjiang Military District Military and Political Cadre School was established.[1]
- In July 1951, the PLA Second Infantry School was established.[1]
- In April 1952, the Bayi Agricultural Academy was established.[1]
- In June 1953, the Xinjiang Military District Cultural Express Middle School was established to retrain retiring platoon, company, and battalion cadre.[1]
- In September 1954, it was renamed as the Northwestern Military District Fourth Cultural Express Middle
School.[1]
- In October 1954, it was renamed as the Forth Cultural Express Middle School.[1]
- In February 1958, the school was abolished.[1]
- In November 1958, the Cultural Express Middle School and Military District Cadre Training Group, and Yili Military Region Ethnic Cadre Training Group.[1]
were merged as the Xinjiang Military District Cadre School.[1]
- In November 1962, it was renamed as the Xinjiang Military District Infantry School with Corps-level authority.[1]
- In February 1969, the Central Military Commission abolished the school amid the Cultural Revolution.[1]
- In March 1975, the Xinjiang Military District Military and Political Cadre School was established with Corps-level authority.[1]
- In January 1978, the school was restructured as the Xinjiang Military District Infantry School and retained its Corps-level authority.[1]
- In 1979, it was renamed as the Urumqi Military District Infantry School.[1]
- In February 1981, it was renamed as the Urumqi Army School.[1]
- In August 1986, during the force reduction, the school and Urumqi Military District Military Medical School, Urumqi Military District Communication Training Group, Urumqi Military District Logistics Training Group, Urumqi Military District Military Armament Mechanic and Vehicle Mechanic Training Group, designated as a Brigade-level entity and assigned under Xinjiang Military Region.[1]
- In March 1993, it was restructured and became the Xi’an Army Academy Urumqi Campus.[1]
- In July 1999, the academy underwent a merger with the Lanzhou Medical Advanced Specialized School Hutubi Campus and became the Urumqi Military Medical College. It was designated as a Corps-level entity and assigned to the Lanzhou Military Region.[1]
- In November 2004, the school was abolished. In December 2004, the school was reorganized into the Xi’an Army Academy Border Defense Cadre Training Group and designated as a deputy corps-level entity and assigned to the Xinjiang Military Region.
- In September 2011, it was upgraded as the Urumqi Ethnic Cadres Academy.[1]
- In 2016, during the Ethnic defense fortification and armed forces reform, the academy was reassigned under the Southern Theater Command from the Lanzhou Military Region.[1]
Kunming Ethnic Cadre Academy
- In June 1949, all camp-following schools of the New Fourth Army underwent a merger and became the
Second Field Army Military and Political University 4th campus in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.[1]
- In 1949, the university was renamed as the Second Field Army Military and Political University Jiangxi campus.[1]
- In March 1950, the university was relocated from Nanchang to Kunming, Yunnan Province. It was renamed as the Southwestern Military and Political University Yunnan Campus.[1]
- In 1951, the Yunnan campus gained independence and became the Yunnan Military Region Basic Infantry School.[1]
- In 1951, the school was expanded into the Fifth Infantry School and Seventh Infantry School.[1]
- In 1953, these two schools underwent a merger and became the Third Infantry School.[1]
- In 1955, the school was renamed as the Kunming Infantry School.[1]
- In 1963, the school was renamed as the Kunming Military Region Infantry School.[1]
- In 1965, the Kunming Military Region Foreign Language Specialized School was established and shared its campus with the Kunming Military Region Infantry School.[1]
- In 1969, both schools were abolished.[1]
- In 1974, the Kunming Military Region Infantry School was reinstated, and it was renamed as the Kunming Military Region Military and Political Cadre School.[1]
- In 1978, the school was renamed as the Kunming Military Region Infantry School.[1]
- In 1981, it was renamed as the Kunming Army School.[1]
- In June 1986, the school was upgraded as the Kunming Army Academy.[1]
- In September 1986, the school merged with the Chengdu Army School.[1]
- In 2011, it was restructured and became the Kunming Ethnic Cadre Academy and was assigned under the Chengdu Military Region as a non-academic education institute for junior commanding officers.[1]
- In 2016, during the reform and reorganization, it was reassigned from the Chengdu Military Region to the Southern Theater Command Army as the Kunming Ethnic Cadres Academy.[1]

Campus
The academy is comprised of the Xi’an-based main campus, Urumqi campus, and Kunming campus. The total campus area is over 6,589 acres (40,000 mu).[1]
