Can This Love Be Translated? (Korean: 이 사랑 통역 되나요?) is an upcoming South Korean television series written by the Hong sisters, directed by Yoo Young-eun, and starring Kim Seon-ho, Go Youn-jung, Sota Fukushi, Choi Woo-sung, and Lee Yi-dam. The series depicts the relationship of a multilingual interpreter and a top actress. It is scheduled for release on Netflix in the fourth quarter of 2025.[2][3][1]

Synopsis
A romantic comedy that revolves around Ju Ho-jin, a skilled multilingual interpreter who becomes the personal interpreter for top actress Cha Mu-hee.[4] Cha Mu-hee and Ju Ho-jin hold contrasting perspectives on love, resulting in misunderstandings. However, as they gradually grow closer, their conversations become increasingly enjoyable, leading to subsequent moments of understanding.[5][6]

Development
According to news coverage on December 5, 2019, the Hong sisters (Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran) were initially preparing a drama with the working title Can This Person Interpret? (이 사람 통역이 되나요?) in collaboration with Director Park Jun-hwa set to be broadcast on the cable channel tvN.[14] The working title was later revised to Interpretation of Salvation (구원의 통역), and the overseas shooting location was said to be in China. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the project faced delays, and no further updates were provided.[15] It is worth noting that the Hong Sisters and Park later worked together on a different drama titled Alchemy of Souls in 2021 and 2022.[16][17]
In 2023, production resumed, and casting news was announced. Yoo Young-eun was named as the new director, and the working title was changed to Can This Love Be Translated? (이 사랑 통역 되나요?).[18] Trii Studio (트리 스튜디오) took charge of the production.[4] According to Ryu Hyung-jin, the Vice President of Imaginus, Studio Sot (스튜디오 솥), led by the Hong Sisters and Trii Studio (트리 스튜디오), led by female creators, Kim Jin-yi , Lee Na-jeong, and Lee Yoon-jung, are both labels under the umbrella of Imaginus, under the leadership of CEO Choi Jin-hee.[19][20]
In April 2024, it was reported that the drama will be released on Netflix.[21] On June 27, 2024, Netflix confirmed the production of the series.[22]
Casting
In April 2023, it was reported that Son Suk-ku was offered the lead role of the series.[23] However, in May of the same year, it was reported that he chose another offer.[24][25] In July 2023, discussions took place with Kim Seon-ho and Han So-hee for the lead roles.[26][27] By September 2023, Go Youn-jung was in talk as female lead.[28][29] Ultimately, Kim and Go were chosen to portray interpreter Joo Ho-jin and top actress Cha Mu-hee, respectively.[4][21] In June 2024, it was announced that Choi Woo-sung would play Kim Yong-woo, the manager of top actress Cha Mu-hee.[9] On June 27, 2024, Netflix confirmed the production of Can This Love Be Translated? and revealed the casting of Kim Seon-ho, Go Yoon-jung, Sota Fukushi, Lee Yi-dam, and Choi Woo-sung with the release of script reading pictures.[22][30][31]
In fall 2024, Keep Alberta Rolling announced auditions for extras in the upcoming Alberta-shot series Love in Translation. No prior experience is necessary for filming, which will take place between September 23 and October 11 in and around Calgary, Banff, and Lake Louise.[32]
Filming
Production preparations were concluded in June 2024, followed by filming, which included filming in overseas locations such as Japan and Italy. The goal was to complete filming by early 2025.[4] Trii Studio, a label of Imaginus, is overseeing the production process, while Studio Hi is responsible for the visual effects.[33]
Go Youn-jung departed for Japan on June 24, 2024, for filming.[34] On the afternoon of July 10, Kim Seon-ho and Go Youn-jung returned from Japan after completing their shoot, passing through Gimpo International Airport.[35]
According to the Directors Guild of Canada, the production titled Love in Translation underwent pre-production for unit shooting in Alberta from August 12, 2024, to September 22, 2024. The unit shoot commenced on September 23, 2024, and is scheduled to conclude on October 11, 2024. The ACTRA Alberta site indicates that filming locations include Calgary, Banff, and Lake Louise. Under the name Sailor Films Inc., the production filmed in Canmore on October 7 and in Banff on October 8 and 9, with a crew of up to 150 people.[36][37][38][39] Go Yoon-jung and Kim Seon-ho posted photos of their experiences seeing the aurora on their respective social media on October 8.[40]
Kim Seon-ho departed for Italy from Incheon International Airport to Rome on the morning of November 23.[41] On December 2, 2024, local media reported that the drama's casts and crews was filming at iconic locations in Siena such as Piazza del Campo, Teatro dei Rozzi, Torre del Mangia, Loggia dei Nove, and Contrada della Torre.[42][43] Filming continued on December 3 and 4, 2024. The next filming location was in Perugia, in the historic center on Thursday, December 5, Friday, December 6, and Monday, December 9, 2024. The filming involved symbolic places in the historic center such as Piazza Italia and Via Alessi.[44][45][46][47][48][49]
On February 4, 2025, the event 'Next on Netflix 2025 Korea' took place at the Fairmont Ambassador in Yeouido, Seoul. During this event, Netflix unveiled its lineup of Korean and global productions for 2025 and shared its vision. Director Yoo Young-eun, who participated as a panelist, noted that the final shoot occurred on February 5.[3]

The series is set to release in the fourth quarter of 2025.[3]
