Carter Burden

Shirley Carter Burden Jr. (August 25, 1941 – January 23, 1996) was an American politician who served in the New York City Council from 1970 to 1977.^[1][2] He was a great-great-great-grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Burden received his B.A. from Harvard University and his LL.B. from Columbia Law School.^[3]

Burden was one of many owners of The Village Voice.^[4]

He founded The Carter Burden Center for the Aging (later The Carter Burden Network) to assist older residents of the Upper East Side(the area he represented on the City Council) in 1971.^[5]

He died on January 23, 1996, in Manhattan, New York City, at age 54.^[3]
