The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked Chandigarh University 32nd in the overall rankings, 20th in the university rankings, 32nd in the engineering category, 36th in the management category, 20th in the pharmacy category, and 13th in the architecture category as per the rankings released in 2024.[11]
A 2025 bibliometrics paper from the American University of Beirut listed Chandigarh University in a case study of schools using "questionable authorship practices" to manipulate research output metrics and rankings.[12][13] The article noted the university had a 530% increase in publications between 2019 and 2023,[12][13] well above India's national average of 36%.[13] Other indications of compromised academic integrity alleged in the study included a considerable drop in the university's first-authorship rate, a 45 percentage point rise in international collaborations, and significant contributions from hyper-prolific faculty with multiple affiliations.[13]

On 17 September 2022, at least 6 girls residing in Chandigarh University hostel complained to the hostel warden about a girl who was secretly recording their videos.[29] Later that day, a video erupted on social media, where the warden of the hostel at Chandigarh University was reprimanding the accused girl for recording bathing videos of her hostel-mates.[30][31] As this went viral, demands for legal action on the matter were being made.[32] On 18 September 2022, Punjab Police arrested the student for allegedly recording objectionable videos of hostel inmates and sending them to her boyfriend in Shimla, who leaked them on the internet.[33]
The university promptly issued a statement saying that there was only one 'leaked' clip and that it was a personal video that the accused sent to her boyfriend in Shimla. However, students at the university protested, alleging that the university was covering up the facts and suppressing the case.[34][35]
A protest took place on the university campus in response to the leaked clips. The protesting students alleged that the girl used her mobile to make videos of students taking a bath.[36] Following massive protests, the university administration declared holidays till 24 September 2022.[37]
The police denied any incident of death, injury, or attempt at suicide in the aftermath of the video leak. "It's a matter of a video being shot by a girl student & circulated. FIR has been registered in the matter, and the accused student has been arrested. No death reported related to this incident. As per medical records, no attempt (to commit suicide)was reported", Mohali SSP Vivek Soni said.[38]
