Claudio Miranda, ASC (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈklawðjo miˈɾanda]; March 13, 1965) is a Chilean-American cinematographer. He is best known for his collaborations with director Joseph Kosinski, as well as for his work on the Ang Lee-directed film Life of Pi (2012), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, making him the second Chilean-born person to win an Academy Award.

He was also nominated for the David Fincher-directed film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), becoming the first film shot entirely digitally to be nominated for the category, and for the American Society of Cinematographers Award.[1][2]

Early life

Miranda was born in Valparaíso to a Chilean father and a Danish mother.[3][4] His family emigrated to the United States when he was a year old, and he was raised in Southern California.[3][4]

Career

Miranda's entered the film industry in the lighting department. He was a gaffer and lighting technician under Dariusz Wolski for The Crow, Crimson Tide, and The Fan.[5] During the 2000's he shot numerous commercials and music videos, winning two Bronze Clio Awards.[5]

He first worked with David Fincher in 1995 as the gaffer on Seven. He performed the same role on The Game and Fight Club, before becoming an director of additional photography on Zodiac.[5][6] He carried on Fincher's previous use of the Thomson Viper FilmStream Camera on Zodiac when filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.[1] The latter earned him his first Oscar nomination. He then won an Oscar in 2012, as well as a BAFTA Award, for his work on Ang Lee's Life of Pi.

Recently, he has become known for his collaborations with American director Joseph Kosinski, acting as cinematographer in all of his movies - Tron: Legacy (2010), Oblivion (2013), Only the Brave (2017), Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Spiderhead (also 2022), and F1 (2025).

Miranda has cited Harris Savides as an artistic influence.[7]

He has been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers since 2009.[5]

Personal life

Miranda has been married to Kelli Bean since 2009.[8] They are the parents of singer Sofia Isella (b. 2005).[9][10][8]
