Comet is an AI-powered[1] web browser based on Chromium. It was launched by Perplexity AI in July 2025.[2]
Initially, access to the browser was limited to users subscribed to the highest, most expensive subscription tier, with broader availability expected over time.[3] The browser was later released for free download in October 2025.[4] A key feature of the browser is the integration of the Perplexity search engine,[5] which enables users to perform a variety of tasks such as generating article summaries, describing an image, conducting research about a topic and composing emails.[6]
Some of its key features are:
- a built-in AI agent able to answer questions about open web pages, summarize content, and perform other tasks;
- unified search: Perplexity's AI search engine integrated as the default search engine for accurate, verified information;
- browser commands allowing users to manage tabs and perform actions using natural language;
- contextual awareness: access to browsing history and open pages to retrieve relevant information and learn user habits;
- seamless import: compatibility with most websites, easy import of bookmarks and extensions from other browsers like Google Chrome.[7]

Security concerns
Researchers at LayerX Security identified a malicious attack vector which they call CometJacking.[8] The exploit could possibly exfiltrate a user's personal sensitive data to a remote server controlled by the attacker. LayerX attempted to responsibly disclose their findings to Comet's developer Perplexity AI in August 2025. Perplexity responded that they saw no security impact and marked the disclosure as not applicable.
