Currently, the compartment train operates on the Bima, Argo Semeru, and Argo Bromo Anggrek. It is considered a sleeper train that was brought back after the end of sleeper train service on the Bima train and the compartment train on the Senja Utama Solo train in the 1990s.
Even though it is called a compartment, the train is considered to be a type of gang train, because each cabin is connected using an alley.

History

Perspective
Sleeper trains were operated from the Staatsspoorwegen era to the Perumka era for night train operations, such as the Java Nacht Expres, to the Bima Train in the PNKA and PJKA eras. Due to financial and social problems, these trains were gradually discontinued considering the high ticket prices and maintenance costs, as well as allegations of misuse of facilities on the trains. The 1990s marked the end of sleeper trains, with the end of the operation of the Senja Utama Solo kuset trains.
For increased comfort, in 2018, PT KAI launched a seated train branded as the Luxury Sleeper, but it is often mistaken for a "sleeper train". This train can't be considered a "true sleeper train" because the seats can only recline up to 150°, so it is still considered a seated train. There are two generations of the Luxury class train that have been produced; all at PT INKA, Madiun.[1][2]
In order to provide a train that prioritizes interior luxury for the upper class society, PT KAI finally produced a gang compartment train called Suite Class. The train was assembled at Balai Yasa Manggarai in 2023 using used executive trains produced in 2008. The train, which would later be named compartment suite, was launched on 28 September 2023 (coinciding with the 78th anniversary of PT Kereta Api Indonesia) and began operating on 10 October 2023, for the operation of the Bima and Argo Semeru (Gambir-Surabaya Gubeng).[3] Began on 1 June 2025, compartment suite trains are also available on the Argo Bromo Anggrek (Gambir-Surabaya Pasar Turi).[4]

Facilities
The compartment train has 16 rooms, each with a single seat, accommodating only one person. The seats can recline 180° to form beds and are equipped with heating and massage devices.
The compartments are connected by aisles and feature electric sliding doors, adjustable lighting, and spacious restrooms. The train also features entertainment facilities in the form of a tablet computer with a limited Android.[5][3][6]
