History

Summarize
Perspective

Modern education introduced in the 1950s prioritized school-based learning, sidelining traditional skills, which neither gained social recognition nor became part of formal education.[7]

Nepal's Formal vocational education began in the 1960s with institutions like the Butwal Technical Institute (BTI) and the Mechanical Training Centre (MTC), which introduced apprenticeships, internships, and on-the-job training (OJT). The planned development of the TVET sector formally started in 1971. In 1989, the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) was established to manage TVET, offering formal and non-formal programs and affiliating with community and private providers. In 2018, CTEVT introduced a dual VET program in selected schools.[8]

Currently, TVET[9] programs are managed by federal, provincial, and local governments, alongside non-governmental and private organizations, ensuring wider access and opportunities across Nepal.[10]

The European Union (EU) and CTEVT have partnered to enhance technical and vocational training in Nepal. This collaboration aims to improve education quality and better align training with labor market needs, fostering socioeconomic growth in the country.[11][12]

CTEVT plays a crucial role in producing a skilled workforce essential for national development. By offering technical and vocational education in various fields, it equips students with practical knowledge and hands-on experience. CTEVT graduates contribute to industries like engineering, healthcare, agriculture, and information technology, addressing the country's labor market demands.[13]

TSLC Programs

The Technical School Leaving Certificate (TSLC) courses are for students who have completed their Secondary Education Examination (SEE) or School Leaving Certificate (SLC). These 18-month programs provide specialized technical education and skills training to prepare students for the workforce. The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge and practical skills, making it an excellent option for those pursuing technical careers without lengthy academic programs. By the end of the course, students are well-prepared for technical roles, making them valuable assets to employers.[15]

Engineering (Sub-overseer)

CTEVT develops curricula, establishes training institutions, and ensures quality education in diploma-level engineering programs like civil, electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering. It plays a key role in producing skilled engineers needed for Nepal's development.[16]
