Overview
Carl Brevillier founded the Zeus pencil factory in 1863 to produce high-quality writing and drawing tools for the public. Hans Wolfgang Hromatka purchased the pencil factory in 1996, preventing the closure of the company and renaming it CRETACOLOR.[2]
Since World War II, the company concentrated on the development and production of high quality art pencils. In recent years, high lightfastness has become an issue of increasing importance to artists, and Cretacolor has been one of the first manufacturers launching ranges of lightfast color pencils with its AquaStick and Marino lines. David J Price is known to use only Cretacolor Cleo 5b, and a hard pencil to emphasize the dark areas, for his drawings.
