Premise

Cyberpunk 2 is a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 that aims to retain the same concept.[1] Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith revealed that the game will include a second city that will "feel like Chicago gone wrong".[2] Features such as "the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date", "memorable combat encounters", and "divergent experiences that cater to all available play styles" have also been mentioned.[3]

Development

Summarize
Perspective

Known internally as "Project Orion", Cyberpunk 2 is being developed by CD Projekt's North American studios in Boston and Vancouver,[4] with the former being established by core team members of Cyberpunk 2077.[5] According to executive producer Dan Hernberg, the new location will help make the game more "authentically American".[4] CD Projekt estimated that 350 to 500 developers would be necessary to create the game.[6] Development is lead by Gabriel Amatangelo, who also directed the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty. Anna Megill, who had previously worked on Control, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and Guild Wars 2, joined as a lead writer, while Alexander Freed, who had worked at BioWare on Star Wars: The Old Republic, is credited as another writer.[7] The game is being developed with Unreal Engine 5, which CD Projekt Red adopted after transitioning away from their proprietary REDengine. Amatangelo revealed that they are working closely with Epic Games to bring features that the REDengine did better than Unreal, calling the technological transition more of a strategic shift than a start from scratch.[8]

The game entered pre-production in May 2025. CD Projekt did not dismiss the possibility that Cyberpunk 2 might not launch until late 2030 or even early 2031, stating: "our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average."[9]
