Dan Hickey

Daniel Hickey^[1] (born May 30, 1957)^[2] is an American drummer, who performed with the alternative rock band They Might Be Giants from 1997 to 2003.

Early life

Daniel Hickey was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and was raised in Long Island and New York City.

Musical career

Hickey's music career started in 1991, when he first played the drums in Joe Jackson's album Laughter & Lust.^[3] He was also the drummer for Jules Shear and Benny Mardones.^[4] Hickey was the drummer^[5][6] for They Might Be Giants from 1997 to 2003,^[6] recording four albums with them.^[7] He was the co-writer of two songs, "Radio They Might Be Giants", and "Robot Parade" (Adult Version)".^[8] He also appeared in the videos for "Boss Of Me" and "Doctor Worm", despite only playing on the former.^[2]

Hickey departed the band in 2004, and would be replaced with Marty Beller, with whom the band had been performing smaller concerts since 2002. Beller later noted that, "I listened to the band’s live tapes over and over. Dan Hickey sounded fantastic. He was musical and played with tremendous clarity."^[9]

Hickey played in Popa Chubby's tour "The Fight Is On" in 2010^[3] and has been playing for Shemekia Copeland since January 2025.^[10]
