Demián Bichir Nájera (Spanish pronunciation: [deˈmjam biˈtʃiɾ ˈnaxeɾa];[a] born 1 August 1963) is a Mexican actor.[2][3] After starring in telenovelas, he began to appear in Hollywood films.[4] He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in A Better Life.[5]

Early life

Bichir was born in Torreón. His parents are actors Alejandro Bichir and Maricruz Nájera.[6] His brothers, Odiseo and Bruno, are also actors.[7] His paternal family is of Lebanese origin.[8] He worked at the National Theater Company, Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky, and the Mexican Association of Theater Critics.[9] He attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[10]

Career

Bichir played Fidel Castro in Che.[11] He starred in the television series, The Bridge[12][13][14] and Grand Hotel.[15][16] His directorial debut film A Circus Story & A Love Song premiered at the Morelia International Film Festival.[17][18] Other films including A Better Life,[19] Alien: Covenant,[20] Chaos Walking,[21] The Hateful Eight,[22] The Nun,[23] and Without Blood.[24]

Personal life

He is an American Civil Liberties Union Ambassador of Immigration Rights.[25][26][27] His second wife, Stefanie Sherk, died in a swimming pool on 12 April 2019.[28][29][30][31][32] Bichir has a daughter, Gala.[33][34][35]
