Dong Nai Football Club (Vietnamese: Câu lạc bộ bóng đá Đồng Nai) is a professional football club based in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam, founded in 1976. With a long history in the Southeast region, the club has experienced many ups and downs, including competing in Vietnam's top-tier division, the V.League 1, from 2013 to 2015.

Quick facts Full name, Nicknames ...

In 2025, football in Dong Nai underwent a major change when Truong Tuoi Binh Phuoc FC relocated and renamed itself Truong Tuoi Dong Nai Football Club.[1][2] Meanwhile, the original Dong Nai FC did not participate in the V.League 2 and was restructured, operating under the name Tre Dong Nai (Dong Nai Youth) in the 2025 Vietnamese Third Division.[3][4]

Early football movement (pre-1975)

Between 1955 and 1965, some teams sponsored by the Republic of Vietnam government became well-known, such as the Air Force Workshop team, the 23rd Technical & Logistics Air Group (later renamed the Technical & Logistics Command team), and the Bien Hoa Sub-Sector team. By 1973, four teams were recognized by the Vietnam Football Federation (of South Vietnam): 3rd Air Division, Technical & Logistics Command, Bien Hoa Sub-Sector, and Hiep Hoa Youth.[5]

Founding and amateur era (1976–2004)

After 1975, football was the first sport to be formally organized in the new province. In March 1976, the Department of Sports and Physical Education established the provincial football team. Dong Nai participated in the first post-unification tournament, the Cuu Long Cup, finishing 8th out of 9 teams.[5]

The team spent many years in the A1 division (the second-tier league at the time). From 1990 to 1999, Dong Nai reached the final promotion round for the top-tier league three times (1990, 1994, 1998) but was unsuccessful each time. During this period, Dong Nai was unique for having three teams in the A1 division simultaneously: the main provincial team, Xuan Loc, and Cao su Dong Nai (Dong Nai Rubber).[5]

Professional era and V.League (2005–2016)

In 2005, the team (having merged with Cao su Dong Nai) turned professional. With sponsorship from the Strata Group, the club was renamed Strata Dong Nai FC and earned promotion to the First Division (V.League 2).[6] In 2008, the Dong Nai Football Joint Stock Company was established, and the team found a new sponsor, Berjaya Corporation, competing as Dong Nai Berjaya FC.[7]

In the 2012 season, Dong Nai finished 3rd in the V.League 2, a position that did not grant promotion. However, the club was given a "special promotion" (đặc cách) to the 2013 V.League 1 to ensure the league had 12 teams.[8]

At the conclusion of the 2015 V.League 1 season, Dong Nai finished last and was relegated.[9]

Restructuring and recent history (2017–present)

In 2017, the club returned, competing in the Vietnamese Third Division with a core of local U-19 players. In 2019, the team (competing as U-21 Dong Nai) finished second in their group and earned promotion back to the 2020 Vietnamese Second Division.[10]

In the 2023 Second Division, Dong Nai finished second in Group B to qualify for the promotion play-off. In the final, they defeated Dak Lak 2–1, with a brace from Cao Quoc Khanh, to earn promotion back to the V.League 2.[11]

The team competed in the 2024–25 V.League 2 season, finishing in 9th place. In mid-2025, following the relocation of Truong Tuoi Binh Phuoc FC to the province, the original Dong Nai FC was restructured into a youth team, Tre Dong Nai, to compete in the 2025 Vietnamese Third Division.[3][4]

Stadium

The club's home ground is Dong Nai Stadium, located on Pham Van Khoai Street in the Tam Hiep ward. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 25,000 spectators. In 2013, to meet V.League standards, the stadium was upgraded with a new lighting system of 1,200–1,400 lux at a cost of over 20 billion VND.[12][13]
