Political career
Summarize
Perspective
Upon his return, he entered politics and said that he would do whatever the party wanted him to do.[10] In March 2014, the Congress Party announced Gogoi as its candidate from Kaliabor (Lok Sabha constituency). After the announcement, Gogoi filed his nomination on 19 March 2014.[1] He won his first election polling a total of 443,315 votes beating his nearest rival, Mrinal Kumar Saikia of BJP by over 93,000 votes.[11][12]
On 8 August 2023, Gogoi lead the No confidence motion against Bharatiya Janata Party government under leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asked three questions to Modi government:[13]
“Why did he not visit Manipur to date? Why did it take almost 80 days to finally speak on Manipur and when he did speak it was just for 30 seconds? Why has the Chief Minister of Manipur not been sacked so far?,"[14]
Gogoi mentioned that since Prime Minister Modi choose to remain silent on the Manipur issue, opposition parties under I.N.D.I.A alliance had to move on No Confidence Motion against his government. I.N.D.I.A. alliance wanted Prime Minister to address parliament on Manipur violence. This no-confidence motion failed to succeed since it did not garner enough support from members in the Parliament.[13]
On 26 may 2025, he was elected as president of Assam Congress Committee by the National Committee.[15]
