Geoff Roes

Geoff Roes (born April 14, 1976 in central New York) is an American ultramarathon runner.^[1]

Career

Roes grew up in Cleveland, New York which is by Oneida Lake. Cleveland is northeast of Syracuse. He excelled in track and cross country^[1] at Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square, New York southwest of Oswego.^{[citation needed]} He competed in cross-country at Syracuse University for one season before being continually injured.^[1] Until he moved to Alaska in 2005 he was not inrunning and he tried ultra marathon running in 2006. His girlfriend was biking the Susitna 100 and Roes entered the Little Susitna 50 in Big Lake, Alaska, a race held in conjunction with the Susitna 100 and has some of the same course as the 100 miler. He won the race, his first ultra event.^[1] In 2010 he won the American River 50 Mile Endurance Run which begins in Sacramento, California.^[2] He also won the 2010 Western States Endurance Run in Auburn, California in a record time of 15:07:04. He broke the race record which was set in 2004 by seven-time Western States winner Scott Jurek.^[1][3]

Roes set the still-standing course record for the Wasatch 100 (a 100-mile race along the Wasatch Front range of the Rocky Mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah) in 2009 with a time of 18:30:55, beating the previous course record by nearly one hour and five minutes. He lives in Juneau, Alaska.^{[citation needed]}
