Ghulam Qadir Mir (12 June 1931 – 29 March 2022) was a prominent politician from Jammu and Kashmir, India. He served as a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and held the position of Minister for Transport in the state government.

Early life

Ghulam Qadir Mir was born on 12 June 1931 in Loan Harie, District Kupwara, into a respected Zaldar family. After the early death of his father, Abdul Ahad Mir, he was raised by his uncle, Haji Ahmed Mir, who was known for his piety and social service.[1]

Political career

Mir began his political career in 1977 when he was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly as a member of the National Conference (NC). He served as the Minister for Transport and was a close associate of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, the founder of NC, known for his commitment to the party's ideals.[2]

In 2002, he left the National Conference and joined the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Death

Ghulam Qadir Mir died on 29 March 2022 at the age of 90. His death was widely mourned in the region, and tributes poured in from political leaders including Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Altaf Bukhari.[3] At the time of death,he is survived by his wife, two sons, and one daughter.

Legacy

Mir is remembered for his dedication to public service and his contributions to shaping the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. A video tribute titled "Remembering the legacy of late Ghulam Qadir Mir, former NC MLA of Rajpora, on his 31st death anniversary at Murran Pulwama" was shared on social media.[4]
