Gimara is a populated place and indigenous community located in Obongi District, Obongi District, in the Northern Region of Uganda.[1] [2]
Gimara is a sub-county in Uganda with 2 parishes and 17 villages.[3] The settlement is situated at an estimated terrain elevation of 637 metres above sea level and is approximately 109 kilometres from Gulu, the regional capital.[1][4]
The Gimara tribe are a group of people living in Northern Uganda in Obongi District.[5] Considered as a minority tribe in Uganda, the government added Gimara tribe to be recognized in Uganda's constitution of 1995 as independent tribes.[6][7]

Geography and location
Gimara is positioned in the Itula municipality within Obongi District, which falls under the broader Moyo District administrative area.[4] The community is located approximately 360 kilometres from Uganda's capital, Kampala, as measured by direct distance.[4]
Indigenous community
The Gimara people constitute one of Uganda's recognized indigenous communities, officially listed in the third schedule of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda under article 10(a).[7] The Gimara tribe has established deep historical roots in northern Uganda's Obongi District, with their cultural heritage dating back to ancient times according to oral traditions.[5]
Language and cultural preservation
The Gimara language, along with other minority languages such as Aliba and Reli, has been the subject of academic research regarding language development programs in northwestern Uganda.[8] Studies have examined the useability, survival, distinctiveness, and representation of the Gimara ethnic group in relation to language preservation efforts.[8]
