Gumrah (Hindi pronunciation: [ɡʊmraːɦ], transl. Mislead) is a 1993 Indian Hindi-language action crime drama film directed by Mahesh Bhatt, written by Sujit Sen and Robin Bhatt, and produced by Yash Johar under the Dharma Productions banner. It stars Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt, Rahul Roy, and Anupam Kher. The film follows Roshni, an aspiring singer who is arrested in Hong Kong on drug trafficking charges after being abandoned by her partner.
Loosely based on the Australian miniseries Bangkok Hilton, the film features music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal with lyrics by Anand Bakshi.[2]
Released theatrically on 3 September 1993, Gumrah received mixed-to-positive reviews, with particular praise for Sridevi's performance. The film emerged as a commercial success, grossing approximately ₹10 crore (US$2.4 million at the time), and ranked as the ninth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. Sridevi earned a nomination for Best Actress at the 39th Filmfare Awards.

Perspective
Roshni Chadda, an aspiring singer, is the only child of Sharda Chadda. Her father, Prakash Chadda, left before she was born under unclear circumstances, and she grows up unaware of his whereabouts. When her mother is diagnosed with a terminal illness, she sends Roshni to Mumbai with a family friend, hoping she will become independent.
In Mumbai, Roshni meets Rahul Malhotra, who is impressed by her voice and helps launch her music career. As she rises to fame, they develop a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Roshni catches the attention of Jagannath “Jaggu,” a petty thief and devoted admirer whose romantic feelings for her are not reciprocated.
Before her death, Sharda confesses that Prakash had been falsely accused of a crime at the national level and had left due to pressure from Roshni's grandmother, who refused to accept him. She urges Roshni to find her father.
While on a trip to Hong Kong with Rahul to search for Prakash, Roshni is arrested for cocaine trafficking. Rahul vanishes without explanation. Roshni is quickly tried and sentenced to death. In prison, she faces harsh conditions and is abused by guards. Jaggu arrives in Hong Kong to support her and hires a lawyer to pursue her case.
An escape plan is initiated after tensions escalate. During a scuffle with the guards, one is killed in self-defense by Roshni, while Jaggu kills the prison warden. They successfully flee and return to India.
At the airport, Roshni learns that Prakash is indeed her father and that he had been wrongfully accused of treason years ago. Later, Roshni confronts Rahul, who admits to being involved in drug trafficking and framing her. She slaps him and has him arrested. In the end, Roshni reunites with her father and marries Jaggu with his blessings.

Production
During an episode of the reality show India's Next Superstars, director Mahesh Bhatt revealed that Sridevi filmed a water sequence for Gumrah despite suffering from a high fever of 102°F (39°C).[3] Her dedication to the role was noted by the crew as a reflection of her professionalism.
Reports also suggest that Reema Lagoo's role in the film was significantly reduced following concerns raised by Sridevi. Allegedly, Sridevi felt that Lagoo’s performance overshadowed her own, leading to a request for the role to be trimmed. In response, producer Yash Johar reportedly promised to cast Lagoo in mother roles in all his future productions, which later included Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Na Ho.[4]
Soundtrack
The music for Gumrah was composed by the duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal, with all lyrics written by Anand Bakshi.[5] The soundtrack was well received and marked the composers' second consecutive musical success following Khalnayak (1993).[6]
