Hisae Mitsuishi

Hisae Mitsuishi (Japanese: 三石久江 Mistuishi Hisae; 21 September 1927 – 26 September 2023) was a Japanese politician. A member of the Japan Socialist Party and later the Liberals for Protecting the Constitution, she served in the House of Councillors from 1989 to 1995.^[1]

Biography

Hisae Mitsuishi (三石 久江; 21 September 1927 – 26 September 2023) was a Japanese politician affiliated with the Japan Socialist Party (JSP) and later the Liberals for Protecting the Constitution. She served as a member of the House of Councillors from 23 July 1989 to 23 July 1995. Born in Karafuto, Japan (now Sakhalin, Russia), Mitsuishi was known for her advocacy on gender equality issues. In March 1995, during a meeting of the Upper House’s legal affairs committee, she raised concerns about the practice of omitting female spouses' names on nametags at imperial garden parties, highlighting it as a human rights issue. Mitsuishi passed away in Makinohara, Shizuoka Prefecture, on 26 September 2023, at the age of 96.^[3]
