Ileksky District (Russian: Иле́кский райо́н; Kazakh: Елек ауданы, Elek aýdany) is an administrative[1] and municipal[4] district (raion), one of the thirty-five in Orenburg Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southwest of the oblast. The area of the district is 3,700 square kilometers (1,400 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Ilek.[2] Population: 25,150 (2010 Census);[3] 28,793 (2002 Census);[6] 28,533 (1989 Soviet census).[7] The population of Ilek accounts for 38.8% of the district's total population.[3]

Paleontology
Fossils of temnospondyls were found in the Lower Triassic (Olenekian) deposits of Ileksky District. These extinct taxa are Parotosuchus, Rhytidosteus, Inflectosaurus, Batrachosuchoides, Wetlugasaurus, Benthosuchus and Trematotegmen.[8]
