Development and History

Summarize
Perspective

In 2019, Grene Robotics introduced GreneOS, a platform designed for hyper-automation and autonomous decision-making. With 15 years of research and development, Grene Robotics is the first Indian company to develop C5ISRT capability in the defence space.[6] They introduced the greneOS Defence platform, now known as DefOS,[7] an autonomous and unified defence system in 2021. The Indrajaal counter-drone system was independently developed by Grene Robotics, without a formal Request for Proposals (RFP) from the Indian Armed Forces. The company undertook the development on its own initiative, focusing on creating an autonomous solution for countering unmanned aerial threats. Upon completion of research and testing, the system is expected to be offered to the Indian military. Grene Robotics has also expressed its intention to export the technology to international markets.

Later in 2021, Grene Robotics introduced two notable products within the DefOS ecosystem which are the Autonomous Manpad Data Link (AMDL) and the Indrajaal autonomous drone defence dome. In 2023, Indrajaal was officially launched in Hyderabad as the only autonomous wide area anti-drone/Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS).

Indrajaal debuted in September 2023 during a public demonstration in Hyderabad attended by senior defense officials including the Governor of Uttarakhand, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, who described it as a "groundbreaking advancement in defense technology" capable of protecting civilian and military assets.[8]

Founded by Kiran Raju (CEO), Wing Commander M.V.N. Sai (Retd., CTO), and Sunil Kalidindi, Indrajaal is backed by Sigma Advanced Systems and India Accelerator. It combines over 15 years of autonomous systems expertise and decades of defense manufacturing experience.[9]

Indrajaal Manpack is a portable drone detection and mitigation system designed for field operations. The system is configured for deployment in tactical scenarios requiring mobility.

Autonomous Interceptor Drone

The company manufactures an interceptor drone designed to neutralize unauthorized aerial vehicles through direct impact. The system operates as part of the broader counter-drone architecture for airspace protection.

Command and Control Platform

Indrajaal's products are integrated through SkyOS, a command, control, communications, computers, cyber defense, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting (C5ISRT) platform. The system provides centralized coordination for detection, tracking, and mitigation of drone threats across networked defense equipment.[11]

Indrajaal Ranger

Indrajaal Ranger is a rapid-response counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) platform designed for mobile deployment in tactical field operations and border security applications. The system is vehicle-mounted to enable rapid repositioning across operational areas. The Ranger integrates multiple detection and mitigation technologies to detect and track unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles in field environments. The system operates as a modular unit within the broader Indrajaal counter-drone architecture and is configured for mobile operations requiring quick deployment and relocation capabilities.

the Ranger utilizes components from the twelve modular technologies that comprise the larger Indrajaal defense ecosystem, including RF detection, radar systems, and command and control integration through the SkyOS platform.

The system is engineered for operations requiring mobility and rapid response, distinguishing it from fixed-location counter-drone installations designed for permanent infrastructure protection or wide-area coverage deployments.

Effectiveness and impact

The Indrajaal system is a counter-drone technology. Its multi-dimensional perspective allows it to detect drones in various scenarios, from silent drones through radar to controlled drones via electromagnetic spectrum (ESM) and even thermal detection for nocturnal operations.

One remarkable aspect is its ability to detect drones in challenging environments like hilly terrains. This innovation represents a significant leap forward for India's defense capabilities, ensuring that drones of any type or origin cannot escape detection.[16]

Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role, enabling real-time decision-making and precise identification of friendly drones.
