Captain Mohd Ismael bin Lt Kol (B) Dato Setia Hj Mohd Samid (12 April 1981 – 20 July 2012), was an officer of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and one of the victims of the 2012 Rampayoh helicopter crash.

Personal life

Mohd Ismael was the eldest son of Lt Col (R) Dato Setia Haji Samid bin Haji Abd Aziz and Datin Hjh Rafeah binti Haji Aspar.[1] Dato Setia Haji Samid is the younger brother of former Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Jaafar Abdul Aziz and elder brother of Mariam Abdul Aziz, which made Ismael a maternal cousin of the late Prince Azim, Princess Azemah Ni'matul Bolkiah, Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah and Prince Abdul Mateen.

Mohd Ismael was married to Dayang Liyana Imani binti Abdul Latif and had a son, Mudzaffar Ilyas.

Military training

Mohd Ismael join the Royal Brunei Armed Forces as a cadet and later promoted to second lieutenant.[2] In 2006, Mohd Ismael was later sent to Singapore to join Singapore Officer Cadet School where he was commissioned as officer. He also became the first foreign cadet to be awarded the Sword of Merit.[2] Upon his return to Brunei, on 19 January 2006, Mohd Ismael were promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant held at a promotion ceremony at the Officers' Mess in Berakas Garrison.[3]

During the Sovereign Parade Ceremony for the 1st Intake Officer Cadets held on 23 July 2009, which was attended by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), the parade was commanded by 770 Captain Mohd Ismael.[4]

On 20 July 2012, a RBAriF Bell 212 helicopter was on its way back to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, following the passengers' completion of training in jungle warfare. At 10:15 a.m., in a location known as Ulu Rampayoh, the helicopter carrying fourteen military men went down. Eleven military servicemen and three crew members were on board, however it was not immediately known who they were. The incident happened one day before the observation of the first day of Ramadan on Saturday.[5]

At his residence in Kampong Jerudong, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; His Royal Highness Second Lieutenant Prince 'Abdul Mateen, ministers, and dignitaries paid their final respects to Captain (U) Mohd Ismael on Saturday, 21 July 2012.
