Isabela Cristina Lohmann Engle (born July 20, 2006) is an American college soccer player who plays as a forward or attacking midfielder for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. She was named TopDrawerSoccer National Freshman of the Year after scoring 19 goals in her freshman season.

Early life

Engle grew up in Edina, Minnesota, and attended Edina High School. She led her high school team to reach the state semifinals in 2021, finish runner-up in 2022, and go undefeated and win the state championship in 2023. She scored 41 goals in her senior season in 2023, including a hat trick in the state semifinals and a brace in the final. She was named United Soccer Coaches All-American, the Minnesota Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year, and the Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year.[2][3] She committed to the University of Notre Dame as a junior.[4] She also competed in high school track and field.[5] She played club soccer for Minnesota Thunder Academy, where she was a five-time ECNL first-team all-conference selection.[5]

College career

Engle scored a hat trick against Samford in her second game for Notre Dame Fighting Irish, which made her the first Notre Dame freshman with a hat trick since Melissa Henderson in 2008.[6] She went on to have six multi-goal games in the 2024 season, including a brace in a 3–3 draw against No. 1 Duke.[7] In the NCAA tournament, she scored three goals in four games as Notre Dame reached the quarterfinals.[5] She finished the season with 19 goals in 22 games, joint-second-most in the nation and the most by a freshman since 2014. She was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Year, first-team All-ACC, second-team All-American, and the TopDrawerSoccer National Freshman of the Year.[8][7]

International career

Engle was called into camp with the national under-17 team in 2023.[4] She was included as an alternate to the under-19 team at the 2023 Pan American Games, where they won bronze playing against other countries' senior teams.[9]

Personal life

Engle is the daughter of Patricia and Ryan Engle and has three brothers.[2] She is of Brazilian descent on her mother's side.[10]
