Peterson made his first appearance in the SHL during the 2017–18 season, suiting up for Frölunda HC. As a young prospect making the transition from junior hockey to the professional level, he played in nine games with the senior squad.[1]

During his fourth season with Frölunda HC in 2019–20, Peterson completed his first full campaign in the SHL, setting personal highs with five goals and 16 points across 43 games before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 1, 2020, he chose to part ways with Frölunda HC and signed a two-year deal with another SHL team, Färjestad BK.[2]

On April 28, 2021, Peterson agreed to a two-year entry-level deal with the Dallas Stars, the team that had selected him in the draft.[3]

At the NHL trade deadline in the 2022–23 season, on March 3, 2023, the Stars traded Peterson to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Scott Reedy.[4] A few months later, in June 2023, Peterson agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Sharks.[5]

After spending two seasons with the Sharks organization, Peterson became a pending restricted free agent but was not extended a qualifying offer to remain with the team. As a result, he entered free agency and returned to Sweden, signing a three-year contract (with an option) with Rögle BK of the SHL on July 14, 2024.[6]
