The building is part of the Savannah Historic District,^[1] and in a survey for the Historic Savannah Foundation, Mary Lane Morrison found the building to be of significant status.^[2]

The house was built by John Scudder, one of the city's "most prolific and successful antebellum builders".^[3] It was later sold to William Wade in July 1860 for $5,000.^[3] Scudder also built the property next door at 11 East Jones Street.
