John William Furphy (born 8 December 2004) is an Australian basketball player for the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks. He was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the 35th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft and later traded to the Indiana Pacers.

Early life and career
Furphy was born and grew up in Melbourne, Australia.[1] He was awarded a sport scholarship to Maribyrnong Sports Academy[2] and he completed his academic studies at Maribyrnong College, graduating in 2022.[3] In 2021, Furphy played two games for the Hawthorn Magic in the Big V Championship division.[4][5] He then started the year in 2022 with the Melbourne University men's team in the Big V Division One.[6]
Midway through 2022, Furphy moved to Canberra to join Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence. In July, he played three games for the BA Centre of Excellence (CoE) men's team in the NBL1 during the 2022 season.[4] He continued with the CoE for a second year,[7] where he averaged 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in 12 games during the 2023 NBL1 season.[8]

College career
In August 2023, Furphy committed to playing college basketball in the United States for the Kansas Jayhawks.[9] As a freshman in 2023–24, he served as a key reserve wing for the Jayhawks.[10] He made his first college start on 13 January 2024, against ninth-ranked Oklahoma and scored seven points in a 78–66 win.[11] In 33 games, he made 19 starts and averaged 9.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 24.1 minutes per game.[12] He was subsequently named to the Big 12 Conference All-Freshman team.[13]

Professional career
Indiana Pacers / Mad Ants (2024–present)
On 27 June 2024, Furphy was selected with the 35th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2024 NBA draft, however, immediately on draft night, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for the 36th overall pick, Juan Núñez and cash.[14][15] On 7 July, he signed with the Pacers.[16] During his rookie season, he was assigned several times to the Indiana Mad Ants of the NBA G League.[17] On 11 April 2025, he recorded a career-high 17 points, six rebounds and three assists in a career-high 32 minutes in the Pacers' 129–115 loss to the Orlando Magic.[18][19]
