Jules W. Hurst III is an American government official who is serving as the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) and concurrently as acting Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)/CFO of the United States Department of Defense since August 11, 2025. Hurst served as the acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness from March 17 to July 18, 2025.[1][2]

Early life

Hurst is from Virginia.[3] He is a graduate of the College of William and Mary, Georgetown School of Foreign Service, and George Washington University.[4][5]

Career

Hurst worked as a defense fellow and policy advisor for Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.[6][7]
