He represented the Chhatarpur constituency and is a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party .[2][1] Before joining AAP in 2014, he was a leader with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His political career, however, started way back in 2007, when he became the corporator for the Bhati ward (two terms). On 27 July 2016, the Income Tax department raided Tanwar's home, office, farmhouse along with his brother Chatar Singh's residence. Tanwar had submitted an affidavit in 2015 to the Election Commission of India showing only ₹176 million (US$2.1 million) of total assets.[8]
On 10 July 2024, he renounced Aam Aadmi Party and rejoined Bhartiya Janta Party.[9][10][5] On 24 September, Tanwar was disqualified by the Speaker Ram Niwas Goel under the anti-defection law and his membership of the Assembly was terminated from July 10, 2024.[4]
