The reservoir, Kondawattuwana Wewa, was constructed between the 1st and 3rd centuries BCE, most likely under the patronage of King Vasabha (67–111 AD).[4] A pillar inscription dating to the reign of King Dappula IV in the 10th century AD states that irrigation water was subject to taxation, along with paddy cultivation, and that unauthorised use of water was strictly forbidden.[5]

It was renovated in 1912 to supply both irrigation and drinking water to nearby villages.[6]
