Lahore 1947

Lahore 1947 is an upcoming Hindi-language period drama film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan. Set against the backdrop of the partition of India in 1947, the film stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi in key roles, along with Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh.^[1][2]

It is based on Prof. Asghar Wajahat's play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai (transl.  from Punjabi: Experiencing Lahore is so fundamental to a fulfilling life that not seeing it is akin to not truly living or being born.).^[3]

The film went on floors in February 2024 and was completed by August 2024.^[4] Initially planned to release on 26 January 2025, it was delayed due to post-production works.^[3][5] The film's music is composed by A. R. Rahman and the lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar.

Plot

Lahore 1947 is set in the Punjab region during the partition of India in 1947. It follows the story of Sikander Mirza, who is the head of a Muslim family that includes his wife Hameeda, son Javed and daughter Tanno. The Mirza family migrates from Lucknow in United Provinces, India to Lahore in West Punjab, Pakistan. Upon their arrival, they are allocated a haveli (mansion) which was vacated by a Punjabi Hindu family fleeing the area due to the partition. The plot thickens when Sikander discovers a haggard elderly Hindu woman still residing in the mansion. The old matriarch (only known as Mai or Ratan’s mother) was abandoned by her family in the mansion when they left for East Punjab in India. Claiming herself the owner of the house, she accuses Sikander and his family of trespassing. Sikander is determined to get rid of the old woman but she refuses to give up the house.

This unexpected encounter leads to rising tensions and complex emotional dynamics as the characters navigate their new reality amidst the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in Indian history.^[4]

Production

The film is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions. The production of the film involved extensive research to accurately depict the historical period of the partition. The sets were meticulously designed to recreate the streets and atmosphere of Lahore during the 1940s. The film marks the reunion of Rajkumar Santoshi with Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan, who have previously collaborated on successful projects.^[6] This will also mark the first time that Deol and Khan are working together on a film.

Soundtrack

The film music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar.^[9]
