The Arabic name comes from a word which means "lion"[1] The Scottish name comes from a variant of Leith, a placename element from Scottish Gaelic laith meaning "liquid",[2] likely borrowed from Proto-Brythonic *lleɨθ "moist". See Water of Leith.
