Uma Musume Pretty Derby is a Japanese multimedia franchise owned by Cygames that has an anime television series. The anime currently has three seasons for the main series, three spin-off shorts series, one ONA, one film, and one spin-off anime series.

An anime television series adaptation of the mobile game aired from April 2^[1]^[2]^[3] to June 18, 2018, on Tokyo MX, with the first two episodes being broadcast back-to-back. Crunchyroll streamed the series.^[4] The anime is directed by Kei Oikawa at P.A. Works, with scripts written by Masafumi Sugiura and Akihiro Ishihara.^[5] The Utamaro Movement composed the music at Lantis. The opening theme is "Make Debut!", while the ending theme is "Grow-up Shine!" (グロウアップ・シャイン!); both are performed by Team Spica, consisting of Special Week (Azumi Waki), Silence Suzuka (Marika Kōno), Tokai Teio (Machico), Vodka (Ayaka Ōhashi), Daiwa Scarlet (Chisa Kimura), Gold Ship (Hitomi Ueda), and Mejiro McQueen (Saori Ōnishi).^[6]^[7]

An anime television series based on the four-panel manga spinoff Umayon (うまよん) aired from July 7 to September 22, 2020. The series is directed by Seiya Miyajima at DMM.futureworks and W-Toon Studio.^[8]^[9] On December 8, 2021, a Blu-ray containing the main story, 12 episodes of the new OVA, and a manga tankōbon was released.

A second season, with a returning cast and Studio Kai replacing P.A. Works in animation production, with the latter studio assisting on the production, aired from January 5 to March 30, 2021.^[10]^[11]^[12] The opening theme is "Yume o Kakeru!" (ユメヲカケル！; "Run for Our Dream!"), performed by Team Spica, while the ending theme is "Komorebi no Yell" (木漏れ日のエール; "Sunbeam Cheer"), performed by Tokai Teio (Machico) and Mejiro McQueen (Ōnishi). On February 22, 2022, a new animation, "1st Anniversary Special Animation," was released on YouTube to commemorate the first anniversary of the game. This work is a continuation of the anime's second season.

A new short anime series titled Umayuru (うまゆる) was announced on May 5, 2022. It is animated by Scooter Films with Miyajima returning to direct and design the characters, with Seiichirō Mochizuki and Yumi Suzumori writing the screenplay. It premiered on YouTube on October 16, 2022.^[13]^[14]^[15]^[16]

A third season was announced on November 6, 2022.^[17]^[18]^[19] Shingo Nagai and Tetsuya Kobari are supervising the scripts, while Studio Kai and the rest of the main staff are returning from previous seasons. The season aired from October 5 to December 28, 2023.^[20]^[21]^[22]^[23] The opening theme is "Soshite Minna no" (ソシテミンナノ; "For Their Beloved"), performed by Kitasan Black (Hinaki Yano), Satono Diamond (Hina Tachibana), Satono Crown (Sayumi Suzushiro), Cheval Grand (Yūko Natsuyoshi), Sounds of Earth (Makiko), and Duramente (Akina), while the ending theme is "Akogare Challenge Dash!!" (アコガレChallenge Dash!!; "Longing for a Challenge Dash!!"), performed by Kitasan Black (Yano) and Team Spica.

An anime ONA series titled Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Road to the Top (ウマ娘プリティーダービーRoad to the Top, Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Rōdo tū za Toppu) was announced on May 4, 2022.^[24]^[25]^[26] It is animated by CygamesPictures and directed by Cheng Zhi Liao, with Tetsuya Kobari supervising the scripts and serving as scenario director, and Jun Yamazaki designing the characters and serving as chief animation director.^[27] The series premiered on YouTube on April 16, 2023.^[20] A compilation film of the anime opened in Japanese theaters on May 10, 2024 for two weeks, before the release of Beginning of a New Era.^[28]^[29]

An anime film titled Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Beginning of a New Era (ウマ娘プリティーダービー新時代の扉, Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Shinjidai no Tobira) was announced on December 28, 2023.^[30]^[31] It is animated by CygamesPictures and directed by Ken Yamamoto, with Kiyoko Yoshimura writing the scripts, Tetsuya Kobari supervising the scripts and serving as scenario director, Jun Yamazaki designing the characters and serving as chief animation director, Yoshiaki Fujisawa and Masaru Yokoyama composing the music. The film was released in Japanese theaters on May 24, 2024.^[32]^[33]

An anime television series adaptation of the Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray manga was announced on August 23, 2024. It is produced by CygamesPictures and directed by Yūki Itō and Takehiro Miura, with Aki Kindaichi handling series composition, Masafumi Sugiura writing the screenplay, Takuya Miyahara and Keigo Sasaki designing the characters, Kenji Kawai and Shūhei Mutsuki composing the music.^[34]^[35] The series will air in two split cours on TBS and its affiliates, with the first cour airing from April 6 to June 29, 2025,^[36]^[37] and the second cour set to premiere in October 2025.^[38] For the first cour, the opening theme song is "Koeru" (超える; "Surpass"), performed by Alexandros,^[39]^[40] while the ending theme song is "∞", performed by Oguri Cap (Tomoyo Takayanagi). REMOW licensed the series for streaming on Amazon Prime Video via GKIDS in North America, on the It's Anime YouTube channel in select regions, on Anime Onegai in Latin America, and also on ADN in Europe.^[41]

A new short anime series titled Umayuru: Pretty Gray (うまゆるぷりてぃ〜ぐれい) aired on YouTube from April 30 to May 6, 2025.^[42]

They also introduce Silence Suzuka as a recent transferee from the prestigious Team Rigil. The Trainer promises he will bring out Special Week's potential and realize her dreams, allowing the latter to join the team as she aspires to be as good as Silence Suzuka, who she now idolizes.

Special Week becomes nervous in the days leading up to her debut race despite asking her peers for advice, but with the support of Silence Suzuka, manages to calm herself in time. On the day of her debut race, Special Week faces stiff competition and foul play from one of the racers, but she beats the other competing racers, winning the race. After the event, the Trainer encounters Team Rigil's trainer Hana Toujou, who reminds him to keep an eye on Silence Suzuka.

Afterwards, the Trainer enters Special Week for the Yayoi Sho to qualify for the Japanese Triple Crown, narrowly beating Seiun Sky and King Halo. Special Week celebrates her victory with Team Spica, where Tokai Teio joins the team. On the day of the Satsuki Sho, the first race for the Japanese Triple Crown, Special Week is given her signature racewear. Special Week follows the same strategy as the Yayoi Sho, only to lose when Seiun Sky predicts her move and sprints earlier to win the race. Special Week becomes frustrated at the loss, but is consoled by the Trainer, who encourages her to prepare for the next race.

The Trainer also works with Hana to organize a mock race between Special Week and Team Rigil's Taiki Shuttle, the fastest short-distance horse girl in Japan. Special Week learns valuable tactics from Taiki Shuttle during the mock race, such as slip-streaming and short-stride running. Despite narrowly losing the mock race, Special Week regains her confidence, and earnestly responds to Team Rigil member El Condor Pasa's challenge to partake in the second Japanese Triple Crown race, the Japanese Derby.

Before the race, Gold Ship tries to persuade Mejiro McQueen to join Team Spica who helps them find a four-leaf clover for Special Week to use as a good luck charm. The Japanese Derby begins, and Special Week, El Condor Pasa and Seiun Sky fight for first place. Seiun Sky pulls ahead on the last corner of the race, only to be surpassed by Special Week thanks to her training. Special Week fends off against a fast El Condor Pasa, winning the Japanese Derby together with her on a dead heat thanks to Team Spica's cheers.

On the night before the Fall Twinkle Series Fan Festival, Special Week writes a letter to her adoptive mother, recounting what had happened to Team Spica after the Japanese Derby. Team Spica then celebrates the festival at Tracen. At sunset, Special Week listens into discussions on the Mainichi Okan, a race that Silence Suzuka and Team Rigil's Grass Wonder will be competing in. Hearing that Silence Suzuka will be racing overseas in the future, El Condor Pasa decides to enter the race as well. The day of the Mainichi Okan comes, and Silence Suzuka, El Condor Pasa and Grass Wonder race against each other. El Condor Pasa and Grass Wonder try to pass Silence Suzuka to no avail, as Silence Suzuka maintains her lead position throughout the race and wins.

Silence Suzuka consoles Special Week after losing the final Japanese Triple Crown race the Kikuka-sho to Seiun Sky, as she tells her plan to race with Special Week in the Japan Cup before leaving for America. While training with Team Spica, Special Week asks the Trainer to grant Silence Suzuka's plan, which the Trainer approves on the condition that Silence Suzuka wins the upcoming Fall Tenno Sho race. On the day of the race, various racers and members of Team Rigil race against Silence Suzuka, who sprints ahead of the pack. However, in the middle of the race, Silence Suzuka suffers a leg fracture, prompting Special Week and the Trainer to aid her. Resting in hospital, Special Week and the other members of Team Spica give Silence Suzuka hope that she can recover in time for the Japan Cup with Special Week.

The two attend Team Spica's New Year's party and shrine visit. After watching the Winter Dream Trophy, each member of Team Spica dreams of racing in the event someday. Silence Suzuka eventually trains again as the year passes, with Team Spica and members of Team Rigil cheering her on. However, Special Week sacrifices her own training to aid Silence Suzuka, causing her to perform poorly in the Takarazuka Kinen against Grass Wonder. Grass Wonder questions Special Week on whether she gave it her all during the race, leaving Special Week doubtful before the Trainer reminds her of her original goal and directs her to win every race in the fall.

He also splits them into two teams, separating a dour Special Week and Silence Suzuka from each other. During training, Special Week and Silence Suzuka run slowly due to them being clouded by doubts. The Trainer organizes a triathlon to push both teams to their best, but Special Week and Silence Suzuka race slowly. After much urging and motivation from the Trainer, both girls run at their fullest. After the triathlon, Team Spica joins Team Rigil to watch El Condor Pasa race in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe against French horse girl Broye. El Condor Pasa races ahead and almost wins, only for Broye to pass her and win. After hearing a crying El Condor Pasa following her defeat, Special Week is motivated to continue training with Silence Suzuka.

However, due to overtraining herself, Special Week fails to reach any podium position. The Trainer orders Team Spica to rest, and he requests Special Week to head home to Hokkaido. Special Week reunites with her adoptive mother, but is forced to not run during her break. However, she regains her motivation, seeing all the letters her adoptive mother has put in front of her late biological mother's altar at home, and receiving a horseshoe present with an inscription of her dream. Returning to Fuchu, she returns to an improved Team Spica and goes back to training. Special Week races at the Fall Tenno Sho against Seiun Sky and King Halo, managing to win her race thanks to her training and her rest.

On the day of the Open Special, while Special Week trains for the Japan Cup, Silence Suzuka leaves the gates late, causing her to trail behind the pack. However, as the pack approaches the finish line, Silence Suzuka begins her sprint, passing the entire pack and winning the Open Special, much to the excitement and relief of everyone.

The Japan Cup begins, and Special Week paces to the back of the pack, with Broye trailing her. Arriving at the end of the back straight, Special Week starts sprinting and gains positions, and Broye follows suit. Broye tries to overtake Special Week, but Special Week manages to hold off Broye, getting the last burst of speed needed to win the Japan Cup. Special Week proclaims on the night that she wants to continue to make everyone's dreams come true before performing her Winning Concert.

A few days after the barrier draw, the horse girls race in the Winter Dream Trophy before performing together in the Winning Concert after crossing the finish line.

The student council tasks Team Spica to invite Team BNW to sponsor a relay race. Biwa Hayahide agrees to join, but Narita Taishin and Winning Ticket refuse. Biwa Hayahide later explains to Team Spica that Team BNW has not been on speaking terms since losing a recent race. Team Spica consults with Silence Suzuka, who posits that Team BNW might be believing they are holding each other back. Hearing this, Team Spica convinces Winning Ticket to join to prove her worth to Biwa Hayahide, which she agrees.

Daiwa Scarlet checks on Narita Taishin's team, only to find out that Narita Taishin herself is not present. Daiwa Scarlet tries convincing Narita Taishin to join to no avail, and Narita Taishin expresses wanting to retire. Daiwa Scarlet shares her concerns to Biwa Hayahide, her sister Narita Brian, and Winning Ticket, worrying them. Narita Brian meets with Narita Taishin and recounts her perseverance to win after multiple losses, hoping it can motivate Narita Taishin to reconsider. At the relay race, Narita Taishin watches it unfold and sees Biwa Hayahide and Winning Ticket wishing her to join in, motivating her to run to the event.

The teams of Biwa Hayahide, Narita Taishin, and Winning Ticket race fiercely, as Narita Taishin reunites with her teammates in time. However, Biwa Hayahide becomes debilitated by a fever and is forced to back out, worrying Narita Taishin and Winning Ticket. Seeing this, Narita Brian rushes to be Biwa Hayahide's substitute, and she races against Narita Taishin and Winning Ticket, much to the crowd's excitement. All racers reach the finish line, though none of the teams win due to disqualifications from Team Spica's antics. Despite this, Tracen encourages the audience to watch Team BNW perform in the future, as Team BNW reconciles. At a future race, Team BNW proudly races against each other again.

In a flashback, a young Tokai Teio sees Symboli Rudolf win the Japanese Derby and extend her unbeaten winning streak. Tokai Teio asks her during a press conference on how she can emulate her. Maruzensky responds that she needs talent, effort and luck, as Symboli Rudolf suggests that she enroll at Tracen Academy. In the present, Tokai Teio maintains five consecutive wins and prepares for the Japanese Derby. Tokai Teio, along with the other members of Team Spica, help out young horse girls in the open campus day at Tracen. Afterwards, Tokai Teio trains for the Japanese Derby. During the race, Tokai Teio runs outside in the middle of the pack. Tokai Teio begins her sprint towards the end, pulling away from the pack to win the race. Tokai Teio performs her Winning Concert, but Symboli Rudolf and the Trainer worryingly notice her leg aching during the performance.

Tokai Teio and the Trainer learn from a doctor that she suffered a leg fracture and that she will not race until the next spring. Despite being restricted to use crutches during the recovery, Tokai Teio is determined to race in the upcoming Kikuka-sho. Seeing this, the Trainer develops a regimen to support her endeavors. Tokai Teio trains for the Kikuka-sho and slowly regains the ability to run as Team Spica also aids her. Tokai Teio, however, realizes she could not fully recover in time for the Kikuka-sho, so she reluctantly decides to pull out of the race, voiding her chance to achieve the Japanese Triple Crown like her role model Symboli Rudolf. Tokai Teio then requests the Trainer to take her to the event. Tokai Teio observes the horse girls being motivated to become better than her. Tokai Teio vows to stay undefeated which the Trainer aims to fulfill.

Later, Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen are selected for accolades at the URA Awards. Tokai Teio also decides to participate in the Spring Tenno Sho and trains for it, as she and Mejiro McQueen later reminisce on their first meeting before joining Team Spica. Mejiro McQueen races for her qualifying race the Hanshin Daishoten during rainy conditions. Despite being crowded around by the pack, Mejiro McQueen pulls away at the finishing straight and wins the race. Seeing this, Tokai Teio becomes motivated to win her qualifying race, the Osaka Hai.

During the students' practice runs, Fujimasa March is favored by other trainers as a star racer after scoring an impressive time. Despite a late start caused by Mini the Lady, Oguri Cap easily outruns and beats her opponents. Witnessing Oguri Cap's run, Kitahara is certain she is the racer he is looking for and asks her to join his team.

Fujimasa March believes her victory is inevitable until Oguri Cap achieves an unprecedented second spurt, giving her the push to gain the lead and seize first place. Oguri Cap then approaches a defeated Fujimasa March and promises to face her again in the Tokai Derby, to which she agrees. Tamamo Cross watches from a distance and marks Oguri Cap as a potential rival. Meanwhile, Kitahara decides Oguri Cap's next race should be the Chukyo Hai, but Musaka cryptically warns him to avoid that race if he wants to go to the Tokai Derby. In Tokyo, Tracen Academy student council president Symboli Rudolf is looking for new talent to revitalize the Twinkle Series, and decides to head to Chukyo as her next destination.

She tells him that she is impressed with Oguri Cap's talent, and wants to scout her for national level racing. This leaves Kitahara conflicted, as moving to the nationals would allow Oguri Cap to race to her full potential at the cost of giving up on the Tokai Derby, and he will have to stay behind in Kasamatsu since he does not have a national trainer license. Oguri Cap meanwhile remains committed to going to the Tokai Derby to fulfill her promise to both Kitahara and Fujimasa March. Unable to make a decision, Kitahara instead forces a choice on Oguri Cap: if she wins the upcoming Gold Junior race, she will go to the nationals, but if she loses, she can go to the Tokai Derby.

During the race, Oguri Cap remains conflicted about whether she wants to win or not, and as a result does not put her full effort into the race. Realizing his mistake in selfishly trying to avoid making a decision himself, Kitahara yells at Oguri Cap to win, which she does. Despite her win, her Kasamatsu fans are reluctant to see her leave for the nationals, but Kitahara gives a heartfelt speech asking the fans to keep supporting Oguri Cap. Oguri Cap then bids farewell to her friends while Kitahara decides to obtain his national trainer's license so he can reunite with her.

However, Oguri Cap is determined to win the rest of her races to prove she belongs in the Japanese Derby. Musaka enters Oguri Cap into the Pegasus Stakes so she can get her first graded win, while warning the racers will be more experienced. Musaka also gives her special training, showing Oguri Cap how other racers can and will block her from gaining an advantageous position. On the day of the Pegasus Stakes race, Oguri Cap gets excited at the thought of running in her first national level race.

However, Yaeno Muteki underestimates Oguri Cap's superior stamina, allowing the latter to surge ahead and beat her. Yaeno Muteki is disappointed that she has been locked out of the Classics, but a last-minute change allows her to advance to the Satsuki Sho and win. The outcome causes buzz within the public who want to see Oguri Cap participate in the Japanese Derby, which is further stoked by journalist Sensuke Fujii. Sensuke is eventually summoned by Symboli Rudolf, and he requests she use her position to directly petition the URA Council to allow Oguri Cap to race in the Japanese Derby.

Meanwhile, Oguri Cap wins her next race at the New Zealand Trophy, and is determined to keep racing to prove herself.

Later, she has a phone call with Fujimasa March, who is losing her motivation to race, only for Oguri Cap to remind her of her promise to keep racing longer than herself. Oguri Cap then easily wins the Takamatsunomiya Hai. Tamamo Cross hears about Oguri Cap's winning streak and asks her trainer to get her into the same race as Oguri Cap. Musaka tells Oguri Cap and Belno Light to take a day off for rest, and they encounter Sensuke, who leaks information about their competition in the upcoming Mainichi Okan and offers his future assistance. On the day of the Mainichi Okan, Oguri Cap and the other racers meet.

In the leadup to the Fall Tenno Sho, Oguri Cap is gifted her signature racewear by Musaka since it will her first Grade 1 race. During the press conference, Oguri Cap meets Tamamo Cross in person for the first time, and gets excited at the thought of finally getting to race against her.

She manages to overtake the lead racer, just as Oguri Cap begins her spurt and starts to catch up to Tamamo Cross.

Tamamo Cross manages to stay in the lead and secures the win, leaving Oguri Cap in second. Despite winning, Tamamo Cross acknowledges Oguri Cap as her rival and equal, while Oguri Cap becomes even more determined to beat Tamamo Cross and they both agree to face off against each other again in the future. Meanwhile, at the Santa Anita Racetrack, an American trainer suggests to his racer that she participate in the upcoming Japan Cup.
