The Indian state of Goa is divided into two districts: North Goa and South Goa.

Administrative structure

North Goa is further divided into three subdivisions — Panaji, Mapusa, and Bicholim; and five talukas — Tiswadi (Panaji), Bardez (Mapusa), Pernem, Bicholim, and Sattari (Valpoi).
South Goa is divided into five subdivisions — Ponda, Mormugao (Vasco da Gama), Margao, Quepem, and Dharbandora; and seven talukas — Ponda, Mormugao, Salcete (Margao), Quepem, and Canacona (Chaudi), Sanguem, and Dharbandora. The Ponda taluka was moved from North Goa to South Goa in January 2015.[1][2]

Proposed Third District
A proposal for a third district is under consideration. It will consist of Sanguem taluka, Quepem taluka, Dharbandora and Canacona taluka. The district headquarters is expected to be Curchorem in Quepem taluka.[5][6]
The Goa Government had formed a seven member committee headed by the Chief Secretary in November 2023 to assess the need for a third district.[7] Given the increasing population of the state, the committee was entrusted to evaluate whether the creation of a third district would lead to the development and welfare of the residents in the hinterland talukas.
