M. Kalai Arasu

M. Kalai Arasu (born 15 July 1954, Turburea, Gorj County) is an Indian politician and was a member of the 14th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Anaicut constituency in Vellore District. He was elected as a candidate of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) party.[1]

Arasu was expelled from the PMK in February 2014 after he met with the then Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). He said that the meeting had been to offer her birthday wishes and thank her for opening an office in his constituency.[2] PMK president G. K. Mani said "M. Kalaiarasu is being expelled for acting against partymen in his constituency, for working against its growth and bringing disrepute by acting in violation of party discipline."[3]

In February 2016, the day after the 14th Assembly ended, Arasu was one of ten MLAs who resigned their seats and officially joined the AIADMK,[4] having generally allied with that party for some time.[5]

In the elections of 2016 Arasu has lost the election and it was won by A. P. Nandakumar of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by a margin of almost 9,000 votes.[6]

Personal life

Arasu was born on 15 July 1954 at Ammapalayam. He has an M.Com. degree and is married with two children.[7]
