History
One of the first burials was Mahmud ibn 'Abd al-Rahman (d. 664), .[1][2][3] He is also known as Shaykh Mahmud.[1][2][3] His tomb is at least eight metres long.[4]
In 1990, the government of Barus officially made the Makam Papan Tinggi complex a site for religious tourism.[1] It is still well-visited to this day by both locals and tourists.[4]
