Early life and family

Perspective
His mother is from Lampreh, Lambaro, Aceh Besar. His father, Mahmud Haytar, is from Lampuuk, Banda Aceh. He moved to Singapore when he was about to be arrested by the Indonesian Army in Aceh, because he was known to be a member of Darul Islam.
Malik Mahmud's father was a successful Acehnese businessman who was very rich and owned land in Singapore. He was also one of the leaders of Darul Islam and was very friendly with Ilyas Leube and Daud Beureueh. His relationship with Hasan di Tiro was almost like a child. Hasan di Tiro during Darul Islam was very close to the Mahmud family, especially with Amir Rashid Mahmud (brother of Malik Mahmud, one of the Ministers in the Free Aceh Movement cabinet).[2]
Mahmud Haytar, Malik Mahmud's father, was very helpful to the Acehnese diaspora in Singapore and also to the Malays, known as the "Father of Aceh". When racial riots occurred in Singapore, Malays in Geylang ran for cover in their homes.
The Acehnese entrepreneurs Kongsi, Permi and Permai were large Acehnese companies in Malaya, most of whom found their initial connections abroad through Mahmud Haytar.[3] Malik Mahmud has many cousins in Indonesia. One of them is the Indonesian Coffee King, the late Mustapha ("Van Mook"), who was one of his paternal cousins.
