Mark S. Anderson is an American immunologist and physician–scientist at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He has researched immune tolerance and autoimmunity for cancer immunotherapy. Dr. Anderson was a Pew Biomedical Scholar and was named the 2024 recipient of the William B. Coley Award for his research in basic and tumor immunology in cancer immunotherapy.[1][2][3]

Early life and education
Dr. Anderson received his BA in Biological Sciences at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, and his MD and PhD from University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois in Immunology. After completing his residency at University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics, he completed his post-doctoral training in the lab of Diane Mathis and Christophe Benoist[1] [4] at Harvard Medical School, Joslin Diabetes Center, where he discovered that the Aire protein projects an immunological self-shadow within the thymus, a finding that provided insights into the mechanism of central tolerance in autoimmunity.[5]

Career
Dr. Anderson currently serves on the faculty at UCSF, where he is the Director of the Diabetes Center at UCSF. He is involved in research on the mechanisms of immune tolerance, autoimmunity, and cancer immunotherapy. He is also the Deputy Director of Immune Tolerance Network (NIAID/NIH) and a board member of the Beatson Foundation and Giannini Foundation, and former President of Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS).[6][7] He is most interested in identfying the key switches that control immune tolerance.[8]

Awards and honors
Dr. Anderson is the recipient of a NIAID/NIH MERIT Award, University of Chicago Medical and Biological Sciences Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research. He was also named a Pew Biomedical Scholar in 2004,[4] and in 2024, he received the William B. Coley Award for Cancer Immunotherapy from the Cancer Research Institute in 2020.[9] He was also inducted into the National Academy of Medicine.[10]
