Politics

The municipal council consists of twenty-seven members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Fourteen councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in fourteen wards, while the remaining thirteen are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. In the election of 1 November 2021 the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of fifteen seats on the council. The following table shows the results of the election.[4]

Corruption

In 2018, the Municipal Manager of Maruleng, Sutane Johannes Lethole, was accused of outsourcing the rental of a single truck for waste removal waste removal at R500 000 per month, with a 15% annual escalation.[5] Lethole was also alleged to have increased his own salary to R1.1 million a month, with a cellphone allowance of R2063, without council approval. Lethole resigned after the Democratic Alliance and Civic Warriors of Maruleng brought the corruption to light. [6][7]
