Matt Mignanelli

Matt Mignanelli (born 1983) is an American artist whose work focuses on large-scale abstract paintings. Mignanelli lives and works in New York City.^[1]

Early life and education

Mignanelli was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1983. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.^[2] After graduation, Mignanelli moved to Manhattan.

In 2011, he received a grant and was an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.

Work and critical reception

Mignanelli's paintings explore the interplay between structure and nature, using graduated light and geometric forms that reference both urban and natural environments. His technique involves freehand-painted geometric shapes, splattered paint, and diluted washes applied over gestural underpaintings. According to the artist, his use of enamel and the color blue is inspired by utilitarian objects commonly found in municipal and industrial settings, such as mailboxes and dumpsters.

In the 2018 monograph Blue Paintings,^[3] published by Denny Dimin Gallery, curator Aaron Levi Garvey described Mignanelli’s work as focusing on the tension between structured daily life and subconscious exploration.

His work has been reviewed in publications including Interview Magazine,^[4] ARTnews,^[5] Vice, Galerie Magazine,^[6] San Francisco Arts Quarterly (SFAQ), Whitewall Magazine, Robb Report,^[7] La Repubblica, San Francisco Examiner, GalleristNY, POST NEW, Complex, NY Arts Magazine, Dazed & Confused, and The Art Dossier.

Mignanelli has lectured at Parsons School of Design and appeared in the 2013 season of VICE Magazineʼs Art Talk video series. In 2008, he collaborated with director Michel Gondry on Björkʼs music video "Declare Independence", where he appears painting.

Exhibitions

Mignanelli has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions in the United States and internationally. His solo show Nocturnes was held at Denny Dimin Gallery in New York in 2018.^[8] He was featured in the group exhibition The Hidden Hour at the SCAD Museum of Art in 2018,^[9] and in Made in America at the Goss-Michael Foundation.^[10]
