Microcotyle erythrini

Microcotyle erythrini is a species of monogenean, parasitic on the gills of a marine fish. It belongs to the family Microcotylidae. This species was described by Van Beneden & Hesse in 1863^[1] and redescribed by Parona & Perugia in 1890.^[2]

The type-host is Pagellus erythrinus. The type-locality is off Brest.^[1] The species has been since recorded from three other hosts (Pagellus acarne,^[3][2] Boops boops^[4][5][6][7] and Dentex dentex^[8] in several localities in the Mediterranean (Montenegro,^[9] France,^[4][10][11] Italy,^[12][2][13] Algeria,^[6][14][15] Spain,^{[16][5][7][17][18][8]} Turkey^[3]) and in the Atlantic, off France^[1] and off Spain^[17][18][16]).
