Early life

In the early 1940s, while residing in Kanpur, Mohan reportedly faced financial difficulties and used a bullock cart for transportation.[3]

Mohan's father, Puran Chandra Gupta, founded Dainik Jagran in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. This was Gupta's third attempt to establish a news business.

Career

Mohan later entered politics and became a Member of Parliament representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, with encouragement from senior party leader Lal Krishna Advani.[4]

Under his leadership, Dainik Jagran was among the first Indian newspapers to adopt color printing and to publish satellite editions. The paper employed around 3,500 staff and introduced "mohalla correspondents", local inidividuals who provide community-based news.

According to the Telegraph India, Mohan, as chairman of the Press Trust of India, supported the introduction of foreign direct investment in print media.[1]

Sanjay Gupta, Mohan's eldest son, is the editor-in-chief and CEO of Dainik Jagran.[5][6]
