The National Library of Jordan is the legal deposit and copyright library of Jordan.[1] It was founded in 1977.[2]

History

  • 1977: Establishing the Directorate of Libraries and National Documents.[3]
  • 1990: The Directorate of Libraries and National Documents was replaced by two new entities:
  • Department of the National Library.
  • Documentation Center
  • 1994: Both the department of the National Library and Documentation Center were merged to be a separate department connected to the Minister of Culture under the name the Department of the National Library.

Department of the National Library tasks

  • National intellectual product promotion and preservation.
  • Collecting intellectual product mainly related to the National Jordanian Heritage. Other intellectual product area of interest: Arab World, Arabic & Islamic civilization, and Human Heritage in general.
  • Preserving documents from different public institutions, documents relevant to Jordan in addition to private documents.
  • Providing depository services.
  • Issuing the Jordanian National Bibliography.
  • Publishing and facilitating material related to libraries' work.
  • Coordinating the work of public libraries.
  • Allowing access to researchers.
  • Mutual lending with other national, regional & international libraries.
  • Organizing different cultural events.
  • Exchanging & gifting materials.
  • Cooperation with international entities in relation to library services.[4]

On september 2025, the website of the National Library of Jordan was tested for conformance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), in its version WCAG 2.2, using Popetech, Wikidata Q136356968 as evaluation platform, which, in turn, uses WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool, Wikidata Q136357132 as automated web accessibilty evaluaton tool (AWAET).

The website of National Library of Jordan obtained a score of 6 decimal out of 10. This is known as Automated Accessibility Score provided by Popetech, which, in turn, uses WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool. The test was taken on September 2025 as part of a research on web accessibility of national libraries around the world [5].

This result means that the website of National Library of Jordan cannot be considered accessible, if the treshold is stablised as 8 out of 10. Therefore, efforts still need to be made to achieve full compliance with web accessibility directives.

This section is added to this page in order to raise awarness about the web accessibility barriers faced by persons with disbilities that limit them to equally enjoying the Web. Web accessibilily is considered basic human right by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities[6] from the United Nations (UN).
