History

Perspective

Created in 1982 by Methodist Hospital leaders,[3] the organization's origins are traced to the 1891 founding of Nebraska Methodist Hospital by members of the Methodist Church in Omaha.[4][5]

In 1991, a new 55,500-square-foot addition at the south of the Methodist Hospital became Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center (MECC). The facility was expanded in 2004 and 2006.[5]

The Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Iowa joined NMHS in 1994.[6][7]

Methodist Fremont Health was formed in July 2018, from an affiliation between Fremont Health and Nebraska Methodist Health System.[8][9]

In 2018, NMHS began its adoption of AI and robotic process automation for its revenue cycle, through integration with its electronic health record (EHR) system.[10] The AI-driven financial management system was implemented in 2019.[11]

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a no-visitor policy, beginning in March 2020, for patients at NMHS hospitals.[12] That June, the system's Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital opened a new 63,144-square-foot medical office building on its campus in Council Bluffs, Iowa.[13] While the COVID-19 vaccine was being developed, NMHS introduced conversational AI for in-coming patient calls, anticipating a high-volume influx of inquiries.[14]

In late 2020, the health system announced a possible database breach at the Methodist Hospital Foundation and the Jennie Edmundson Foundation, via a cyber security breach at cloud computing provider, Blackbaud.[15]

In 2023, a federal judge in Omaha dismissed a ERISA lawsuit previously filed against Nebraska Methodist Health System.[16]

Operations

Nebraska Methodist Health System operates as a non-profit healthcare organization,[17] with 685 beds within its system. Facilities offer programs in obstetrics, neurology, cancer care, cardiology, rehabilitation, and geriatric care.[18]

The three major facilities in the system, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital (Council Bluffs, Iowa), Methodist Women's Hospital (Elkhorn, Nebraska), and Methodist Hospital (Omaha, Nebraska), have served the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area for more than 120 years. Two dozen additional facilities in rural Nebraska and Iowa provide family practice services and specialties including pediatrics, behavioral health, radiology, and allergy care.

The Methodist Health System is affiliated with the Nebraska Methodist College.[19]

Partnerships

Nebraska Methodist has partnered with for-profit behavior health operator Acadia Healthcare to operate some of its facilities.[20][21][22]

In August 2024, Jennie Edmundson Hospital and Acadia Healthcare broke ground on 24th Street in Council Bluffs, Iowa for the construction of the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Behavioral Health Hospital. Expected to open in 2026, the new hospital aims to care for residents of western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.[23]
