Nevendon

Nevendon (formerly spelt as Newendon)^[1] is an area of Basildon, in the county of Essex, England. It was once a village and civil parish. It is 10 miles (16 km) miles from Chelmsford. It has a church called St Peter's Church which is a Grade II* listed building.^[2]

History

The name "Nevendon" means 'At the level valley' or perhaps, 'Hnefa's valley'.^[3] Nevendon was recorded in the Domesday Book as Nezendena.^[4] Nevendon was in Barstable hundred.^[5] In 1894 Nevendon became part of Billericay Rural District, on 24 March 1889 part of Nevendon parish was transferred to Pitsea, in 1935 it became part of Billericay Urban District, on 1 April 1937 the parish was abolished to form Billericay.^[6] At the 1931 census (the last before the abolition of the parish), Nevendon had a population of 373.^[7] In 1955 Nevendon became part of Basildon Urban District. In 1974 Nevendon became part of Basildon non-metropolitan district in the non-metropolitan county of Essex. No successor parish was created for the former urban district and so it became unparished.
