History

Prior to July 2015, Norfolk Island was self-governed by the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly. The Norfolk Island Regional Council was formally established on 1 July 2016 and, unlike most local government bodies in Australia, delivers many Commonwealth services to residents in addition to local-level services such as land planning and emergency management.[5]

In December 2021, the elected council was dismissed and an administrator, Michael Colreavy was appointed.[6][7]

On 13 November 2024, the Federal Minister for Regional Development, local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain, announced a new governance model for the island – the Norfolk Island Assembly – and the extension of the administration period under a new administration team replacing Colreavy. The Minister appointed a Lead Administrator, Scott Mason, and a Financial Administrator, Gary Mottau, who both commenced on 6 December 2024.[8]
