Ohaozara

Ohaozara is a Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. It is made up of Ugwulangwu, Uburu and Okposi with the headquarters at Obiozara. Meanwhile, "Obiozara" is a mapped out administrative area from parts of three towns; Okposi, Onicha-Igboeze and Uburu in 1976 during the old Ohaozara LGA establishment.

The Ohaozara local government has an area of 312 km² (120 sq mi) and a population of 148,626 as of the 2006 census. The postal code of the area is 491. The current chairman is Chinonso Ajah.^[1] It is under the Ohanivo Federal Constituency currently represented by Hon Nkem Kamma Kama. It's also under the Ebonyi South Senetorial District being represented by Sen. Anthony Okorie Ani.

History

During the creation of Imo state In 1976, the name "Ohaozara" was politically adapted to be a local government's name from the indigenous place called Ohaozara which is made up of six towns: Oshiri, Okposi, Isu, Ugwulangwu, Uburu and Onicha-Igboeze. Therefore, it's historically and traditionally called OHAOZARA OBODOISII (meaning, Ohaozara of six towns). Ohaozara people are subgroup of the Igbo people and Ohaozara language which is a dialect of Igbo language is spoken in all the six towns of Ohaozara.

The 1976 to 1996 Ohaozara LGA (under Imo and Abia state) is today split into three area councils namely; Ohaozara local government, Onicha local government and Ivo local government of Ebonyi state. It's the today known as Old Ohaozara or commonly OHANIVO (acronyms of OHAozara, oNicha and IVO. The three local government areas now belong to one constituency called the Ohanivo Federal Constituency.^[2]

Today, while three Ohaozara towns(Uburu, Ugwulangwu and Okposi) are politically under Ohaozara LGA administrative council, the three remaining Ohaozara towns(Isu, Oshiri and Onicha-Igboeze) are politically under Onicha LGA administrative council.
