Olenyok (Russian: Оленёк; Yakut: Өлөөн, Ölöön) is a rural locality (a selo) and the administrative center of Olenyoksky District in the Sakha Republic,[1] Russia, located north of the Arctic Circle. Population: 2,273(2010 Census);[2] 2,228(2002 Census);[7] 2,133(1989 Soviet census).[8]

Geography

The village is located by the Olenyok River, a few miles downstream from the confluence of the Arga-Sala, its largest tributary.[9]

Olenyok has a subarctic climate (Köppen climate classification Dfc). Winters are extremely cold with average temperatures from −39.8 to −32.0 °C (−39.6 to −25.6 °F) in January, while summers are mild with average temperatures from +10.3 to +20.4 °C (50.5 to 68.7 °F). A temperature of −62.9 °C (−81.2 °F) was recorded in January 1959. Precipitation is quite low, but is somewhat higher in summer than at other times of the year. Temperatures in summer sometimes reach +30 °C (86 °F) and the record high is +35.7 °C (96.3 °F), recorded in July 1936.
