Technology and functionality
Rather than using conventional top-level domains such as .com, .org, or .net, hidden service addresses within the Tor network end with the .onion suffix and are only accessible through Tor connectivity.[4][5][6] Onion.run functions similarly to Tor2web, acting as a specialized proxy or gateway between Tor hidden services and users who are not directly connected to the Tor network.[7]
It enables users to access .onion websites directly through the surface web by substituting the .onion portion of a hidden service URL with .onion.run.[8][3]
For example:
- Original:
example123456789abcdef.onion/ - Proxied:
example123456789abcdef.onion.run/
