Etymology
The name Perinthalmanna is believed to originate from the Malayalam words "Perum" (big), "thal" or "thallu" (fight or combat), and "manna" (land or place), meaning "land of great fights." This reflects the town’s historical role as a center of martial traditions and its significance as the headquarters of the Valluvanad kingdom, which was known for its warrior culture.
History
Perinthalmanna has historically been an important administrative and cultural center in the Malabar region of Kerala. It was part of the Valluvanad feudal state, which played a significant role in the region’s political and cultural history. The rulers of Valluvanad, known as the Valluvakonathiris, governed the territory from key centers like Angadipuram and Perinthalmanna. Valluvanad was noted for its local governance, social customs, and regional festivals.

During British colonial rule, Perinthalmanna served as the headquarters of Valluvanad Taluk in the Malabar District. Following Indian independence and the formation of Kerala state in 1956, Perinthalmanna became part of the Malappuram district.
The town was initially governed as a Grama Panchayat from 1933 and was upgraded to a municipality on 10 February 1990. Since then, Perinthalmanna has grown into a significant commercial, cultural, and healthcare hub in the region.
